When life “life’s” you…

2024 has been one insane year.

We are all thrown challenges in our lives that call for us to step up and shoulder a burden that we may not have expected, or if we expected it, you can guarantee that you didn’t expect it to “quite turn out like that”, well 2024 has been one of those years.

As I look at the dates on the posts here, I see I last wrote something in January. It’s now October. Go figure…

In that time, we have moved location, established Tauranga’s only donations-based kempo karate dojo, established a community-focused non-profit organisation on a mission to make martial arts affordable for everyone, grown our class to over twice as large as it was in 2023, helped build and guide the development of a number of people and many other things I can’t even begin to remember.

We didn’t get it right all the time. There are a few situations which I wish I had handled differently. There are situations which we did get right too.

The road less travelled

When you study and practice martial arts properly, you will travel a journey which teaches you how to deal with life’s little challenges and life’s big ones too.

My martial arts journey is the sole reason I made it to 53 years old. Without it, I would have ended up like so many other people I knew when I was younger – in jail, or dead.

I would never have bene able to navigate the hardest and darkest parts of the financial and personal challenges that life throws at us.

We take these lessons and we look at ways we can present them to others, ways we can repackage them to help people learn to navigate their own lives.

This is part of the journey of Life Protection.

We get to teach other people how to protect not only their lives, but the lives of all the people they come into contact with. We get to help them protect the people around them by teaching them how to protect themselves, not only from physical harm, but from mental harm, emotional harm and almost any other kind of harm you can think of.

We build strong families and strong people through the challenges we face in the dojo, and then in life.

As 2024 begins to come to a close, the question I will ask you is;

“What will you do in 2025 to make your life, and the lives of those around you, better?”

Learning to solve problems

People often think that learning Martial Arts is all about the physical, kicking, punching, throwing, getting kicked, punched and thrown…

Or, they go to another end of the scale and think that there’s some mystical deep, arcane knowledge which can be learned – some kind of Jedi stuff.

Not true.

There’s a thing called Occam’s Razor. It’s a philosophical concept that says (in simple terms) “the easiest explanation is often the right one”. Martial Arts fits into that. It’s about finding the simplest solution to a given problem.

Sometimes the solution needs to be kicked, punched or thrown. Sometimes it needs a clear head to see the answer that’s right in front of you.

Having something that keeps your “monkey mind” busy allows the deeper part of the mind to speak up and you’ll often see the answer clear as day.

There’s nothing arcane or deep about that – it just makes sense.

We can make a difference

2024 is going to bring a whole new level of excellence to the Tauranga Martial Arts community.

Ryukenkan Dojo will be offering classes on a donations basis.
Anyone can learn martial arts and contribute only what they can afford to spare.

We think that at this time, when everything costs more, and life is just that much harder, if we can bring something beneficial to someone’s life, something that maybe, just maybe, will help them make a breakthrough to a better life, to a life where they can make a real intergenerational difference, then it’s our responsibility to do just that.

From January 2024, all students will be asked to contribute what they can afford. Our suggested donations are:

Suggested donation per school term.
Youth (including students)$30
Adults$60
Familes$110
Donations are suggested only – please discuss your needs with us.

We welcome anyone to join our classes and enjoy what Ryukenkan Ryukyu Kempo can bring to your life.

If you need further information, or have any questions, please contact us via email at info@kempo.nz

2024 Students

As part of our changes in 2024, we require all students returning to 2024 classes to complete a student details form.

This form is not a full membership form – all students will also be required to complete a full membership form. This simple form is to collect contact details for notifications.

If you’re unsure if you need to complete this form, talk to an Instructor for more details.

We don’t do “InstaGrat”…

If you attend every available class, and invest several hours of your personal time practicing, its possible that you’ll earn a Black Belt in, or around, 5 years.

If you add up all the class requirements and attend minimal classes with next to no additional practice, and you’re blessed with a strong mind and body, it’s possible that you’ll earn your Black Belt in 7 years.

Why does it take so long? Why is it possible in other martial arts to earn rank in under 3 years?

Ryukenkan Ryukyu Kempo has been around a long time. Along the way, we’ve made our mistakes and we admit that we have issued rank to people who didn’t deserve it. We have also seen how that damages the reputation of our classes and how that, in turn, hurts our students.

Because of those past mistakes, we said “no more”.

  • No more easy gradings
  • No more “participation medals”
  • No more gradings that make people “feel better”
  • No more gradings that make parents feel better

When we issue rank to a student, that rank must have meaning. For the rank to have meaning, it must be earned.

Each belt level has a number of items that are prescribed. Each item must be demonstrated to a set level. If you ask yourself honestly, “Do I want lower quality now, or higher quality later?”, only a fool takes the easy option.

We’re not here to give people handouts. We’re here to build strong people who have successful, strong lives.

Why Ryukyu Kempo?

There are over 50 martial arts groups in Tauranga.

Why not choose Muay Thai, BJJ, MMA, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, Karate, Judo, Boxing?
What makes Ryukyu Kempo so different?

Let us ask you these questions:

  • Are you looking for an established class?
  • Do you want highly experienced instructors?
  • Do you want to learn from people who are successful in many areas of life?
  • Do your children need good role models?

Ryukenkan Dojo has been operating in Tauranga since 1995 and Marty Rickard (Head Instructor/Founder) has been training in Tauranga since 1982. We’ve seen it all come and go, we’ve continued to teach our classes no matter what the latest trend and fad has been.T

To become an instructor with Ryukenkan, adults students must have a solid career, lead a good family life. They must contribute to society in a positive way. These people will be interacting with you and your family, you need to be able to trust us, and we place the highest level of importance on that trust.

Looking at todays world, it can be hard to find a good role model for children.

Too many high profile people look solid on the outside, but end up in the news pages for something that we’d rather they didn’t do.

In a world where social media is creating mental health issues, people (yes, all people) need to be grounded in the world of everyday life, not a world which isn’t real, or causes anxiety.

There’s a lot to be said for a bit of “old school family values”, respect, resilience, hard work, focus, self discipline – these are the traits that make people successful in life.

Ryukyu Kempo teaches these character traits through the medium of traditional Martial Arts. We place an emphasis on safety, hard work, and earning your place in the world.

Why not join us and find out how we make this happen?

20 years of Ryukenkan in Tauranga

Ryukenkan Instructors in 2018

In 1995, Marty Rickard returned to Tauranga and brought with him the first Ryukyu Kempo classes.

Initially teaching from an old Navy building on the waterfront, the classes changed and grew over the years.

In 2024, Marty established the most authentic lineage of Ryukyu Kempo taught in the Southern Hemisphere and founded Ryukenkan Dojo.

Teaching Ryukyu Kempo sourced directly from senior students of the founder, Taika Seiyu Oyata, Tauranga became the home of Ryukyu Kempo expertise in New Zealand.

2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Ryukenkan Dojo and authentic Ryukyu Kempo. The art has been shared in many parts of New Zealand and overseas.

Wouldn’t you want to be a part of the Ryukenkan Ryukyu Kempo journey?

In 40 years of martial arts study, Ryukyu Kempo is simply the most complete Martial Art I have ever seen.
Marty Rickard – Head Instructor

Imagine how your family’s life could change when they attain the following benefits:

  • Developing the respect and self discipline that open the doors of opportunity throughout life.
  • Knowing that concentration, focus and perseverance lead to success – because they have experienced it in their every day life.
  • A drive to understand, improve, achieve, succeed and help build strong families and communities.
  • Being stronger, more able and confident.
  • Develop an attitude that promotes and delivers success in all areas of life.
  • Learning skills that link thinking and movement that help them feel positive, protect them and energize them
  • Having proven that effort and investment is enjoyable and over time delivers results.
  • Demonstrating personal responsibility engagement in all parts of life, every day.

And, what if we said we offer all this for only what your family can afford?

Tauranga has some of New Zealand’s highest costs of living.
We’re here to offer something that will benefit your family, without causing financial distress.

Why book one class, when we’ll give you 10 for free?

It’s hard to decide if a martial arts class really fits you if you only have one or two classes before you have to pay.
We believe you need time to get to know people and decide if the class fits. We believe this so strongly, that we offer all new students 10 free classes (across 5 weeks) before they have to spend a cent, or make any commitment.
