Support for Neuro Diverse students

Ryukenkan Dojo supports the Neuro Diverse community. A number of our past and present members are neuro diverse and we understand that sometimes, you have to change the process to perfect the outcomes.

Any student who finds the full testing and grading process too complicated or difficult can opt to test under the Progressive Testing Programme for the first half of their progression to Black Belt.

Students who choose this will approach the curriculum one step at a time. While they will still learn multiple topics with the main class, they will only be tested on one specific topic at a time.

Once they have successfully mastered all topics for a given rank, they can progress to the next rank.

This option is available for beginner students until they reach the rank of Green belt (6th Kyu), which represents the mid-point on the journey to Black Belt.

Working towards testing

Red Tag – Kata

A red tag will be added to the belt once the student can demonstrate the kata requirements to the standard required.

Brown Tag – Kobudo

A brown tag will be added to the belt once the student can demonstrate the kobudo requirements to the standard required.

Green Tag – Drills

A green tag will be added to the belt once the student can demonstrate the drills requirements to the standard required.

Ready for Testing

“All Tagged Up”

Once a student has competed the requirements for all three tags, they will be required to demonstrate all the items they have learned.

Progressive Students will be required to achieve the same pass marks as regular students.

Questions and Answers:

How will this effect “time between tests”?

All students are required to demonstrate skill regardless of how long it takes to develop that skill.

Regular tests occur three to four times in a calendar year. It will be possible for a Progressive students to move thorugh ranks at the same pace as a regular student. This is determined by the students capability.

If a progressive student is moving through ranks at the same pace as a regular student, they would most likely be transferred to the regular testing programme.

Will there be additional cost associated with Progressive Testing?

No. Currently Ryukenkan Dojo does not charge for test fees for any rank. This is part of our “Community First” mission. Progressive tests and tags will be provided at no cost for as long as we are able to keep doing this.

Is Progressive Testing “easier”?

The test standards applied are the same as for general students. What Progressive Testing brings is the ability for the student to focus on being really good at one thing, rather than having to worry about learning and mastering several components at a time.
